The University of Michigan, aka the Michigan Wolverines, has been a prominent name in college sports for many decades, across many areas of college athletics. From the glory of the gridiron to their emerging basketball prowess, the University of Michigan is steeped in tradition and continues to entice some of the best talent to come to its alma mater to compete in college athletics. U of M has also been at the forefront of media and technology. Michigan was one of the first schools to start using radio and television to broadcast its games and is now on top of social media and tracking population trends during athletic competitions. The University of Michigan was created by the Land Grant Act in 1817. At the time it was known as Catholepistmiad, or University of Michigania. The school was located in the city of Detroit and there was a single school building there. It was not until 1821 that the school changed its name to "The University of Michigan" and the school also began to recognize and form a 21-member board, including the governor of Michigan at the time. In 1837 Michigan finally moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, the current location of the university's main campus. Three years later the school built four identical homes for the school's professors, one of which would later become the home of the university president. The first incoming class at the university was in 1841, the school opened its doors in Ann Arbor to six freshmen and one sophomore that year. The school recognized two teachers who taught the seven students. In 1845, the University of Michigan held its first commencement at the First Presbyterian Church. The graduating class consisted of 11 students, all of whom were... half of the paper... 58, Due to university budget cuts, WFUM was cut from the program and WUOM celebrated its 10th anniversary. The radio station was also awarded a grant to produce the documentary series on the growth of nationalism throughout the 20th century entitled “One Nation Indivisible.” The radio station began expanding its reach in 1974 with the addition of the first subscription marathon on the air. In 1989 WUOM changed its name to Michigan Radio, to better represent the area covered by the radio station in Michigan. Michigan Radio moved its headquarters in 2003 to the historic Argus Building, located on West William Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the last decade Michigan Radio began broadcasting in high definition and, in 2008, introduced Michigan Mobile Radio. People could access Michigan Radio and NPR news on their cell phones and other mobile devices.
