“One of the greatest things about being a director as a life choice is that it can never be mastered. Each story is its own type of expedition, with its own set of challenges” (“Filmmaker IQ” 2). Oscar-winning director, Ron Howard, said this quote. Directing a film is a profession well known throughout the world. Movies have brought happiness to millions of people around the world. Directors are the main force behind creating this happiness. However, this work is not easy. Directors are people who put together the whole film with their experience and their eye for beauty, which explains why they are paid around 70,000 dollars and why this career requires specific qualifications. Many directors join the Director's Guild of America when they enter the profession. “To be accepted into this highly competitive program, an individual must have a bachelor's or higher degree or 2 years of experience and must complete a written exam and other assessments” (“Careers.org” 2). Many directors take this path when they join this profession to learn the ways of the craft from someone else. “Feature film directors basically belong to two working groups: unionized and non-union. To work on a studio film, you have to be a member of the Director's Guild of America--in the union” (“Director” 61). Many directors started as runners on a set and worked their way up to the director position, learning all the way (“Creative Skill Set” 2). Many people want directors who have only raw experience, so an assistant director is also likely to become a director. Most directors come from other jobs in the film industry as screenwriters, actors or cinematographers. It is very rare for a director to be successful right from the start… halfway… As far as directing is concerned, there are still many things that attract people to this vocation. The thought of being world famous is a major attraction to this profession, even if it is unlikely. When directing films, the idea that you might have to interact with famous actors and people from the film world allows people to dream of meeting someone they adored on their television. These ideas, even if weak, represent a great push towards directing films. In fact, “employment in these occupations is projected to grow 11% during the decade 2006-2016” (“Careers.org” 4). Overall, filmmaking is not a vocation that will soon become unwanted or unnecessary. Directors are people who put together the whole film with their expertise and eye for beauty, which explains why they are paid around 70,000 dollars and why this career requires specific qualifications.
