1- I used the book When the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. It has 36 chapters. The movie I used was Troy.2- The book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Troy share similar issues. Politics, human rights and public opinion are the issues expressed by both the book and the film. a- Politics is an issue that appears in the film and in the book. In the film, power-hungry Achilles kills his father and his prized general to allow himself to become king. In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou states, “Everything that works against you can work for you once you understand the Inverse Principle.” (p. 256). The author expressed the power struggle of prisoners which often ends in violence. According to Hans Mogenthon, politics is defined as a “power struggle” (class notes). b- The second similarity concerns human rights. Both the film and the book show how the citizens and fighters of Troy were denied their rights. In the film, soldiers are locked in a small cell with poor medical care and disregard for human life. In the book, Maya Angelou states that “a person convicted of a crime and sent to prison lost privileges such as voting and holding civic office” (p. 452). Prisoners had no right to legal action involving their property, marriage or custody of their children, or other matters outside of prison. According to Mora et al, “the Texas Constitution provides protection to crime victims” (p. 32.) c- Third, there is medical care. In the film, Achilles suffered from an illness at the beginning of the film that disabled him for a period of time, then later in the film he recovers and continues to fight in the war for the freedom he and his land deserve. If Achilles had a better than average doctor, then he would have had enough... middle of paper... black girl or boy, who would have had to deal with racism, sexism, violence, and loneliness within the culture. Not knowing what exactly is going on in the civil rights movements as a young adult was not accepted. d- Racism and segregation; debilitating displacement; resistance within the book shows that the civil rights movements were an important movement as citizens wanted equal rights with each other but could not until the civil rights law was passed later as the years went by. 5- Five political issues in the film. A. The government was run horribly by the leader of the Trojan soldiers, who led them to war and didn't know what they were getting themselves into.b. The Trojan dictator and the Trojan soldiers demonstrated that there are no limits to what citizens say about government and dictatorship. Whatever happens in the city of Troy, the citizens do not have the final say.
