Forms of Achievement Motivation Achievement motivation comes in different forms. One of these forms is the desire to win. Another form of motivation to achieve a goal is the fear of losing. Having great results depends on how you set your goals and what your motivation is. It also depends on how you were raised. People can change their view of outcomes depending on external factors. I teach weightlifting at a high school. There is a wide range of opinions among athletes about how high they set their goals. First of all, I had to observe each individual athlete's behavior and how they adapt to positive and negative feedback. Since they didn't feel comfortable as a team yet, I would have to motivate them separately for my first test. I wanted to bring them together as a team so we could see the results as a whole and motivate them as a team. To do this, I had to try to make them friends. One way I decided I could do this was to make them mad at me and the other coach. This would unite them and ultimately show respect for us. We had athletes do all kinds of different exercises that they despised. This way they would complain to each other and have a basis of agreement. This showed that they all had something in common; a strong aversion to the routine we had accustomed them to. Now that they had become a united team, I could further motivate them as one unit, instead of chasing each athlete individually. The first meet of the season was one of our rivals and we decided to use this rivalry to our advantage to excite the athletes. I told the guys we were a lot better than the other team. Many athletes took this as a sign that they did not have to train as hard as usual, because it would be a sure win. They didn't know that the other team was as good as us. Our team lost that match. Many kids were angry about losing to their rival. The next day at practice, I told them they would see this team later in the year, but we needed to focus on our next game. As the match against our rival approached, I told them how we had to work harder than ever to beat this team.
