In James Joyce's story, “Eveline”, it is set in Ireland, in Dublin, in a small neighborhood during the 1900s. Eveline falls in love with a man named Frank, who is a sailor and has a home in Buenos Ayres, Argentina. She was left to make a difficult decision between the love of her life or continuing to stay in her own life. In the end he chooses to stay with his family life. Through his Irish customs, his fears and his Catholic beliefs he chooses to abandon his dreams for a better life. Evelin's Irish customs played an important role in her decision making. In the early 1900s the Irish people were not open to many new things. In the story it says: "She gave him her entire salary... She said he squandered the money, that he had no head, that he wouldn't give her his hard-earned money..." This shows me that they were not equal rights for women. Eveline didn't have many rights like we have now in the 21st century. He had no money or savings to escape, he had nothing. What if she runs away with him and things don't go as she hopes. Where had she gone?...
