CHAPTER 1: PROBLEM SETTING1. IntroductionLeisure can be loosely defined as time spent without work and household activities in activities such as recreational activities, cultural events, sports, and social visits (Ettema & Schwanen, 2012). Most people go on leisure trips away from their country of residence with the aim of disconnecting from the daily frenzy. Leisure travel can be long or short term depending on your financial budget. It is usually a time to connect with nature, have fun, and visit historical sites that might motivate them. According to Chan (2001), being happy, amazed, and satisfied in a state of leisure could result from such activities. Statistics obtained from tourism in Malaysia in the year 2012 stated that domestic and foreigners amounted to 56,072,199 million. National credits amount to 29,901,325 million, while foreign credits amount to 26,170,874 million. Of the amounts indicated in the statistics, Terengganu declared the amount of 1,178,719 million. Therefore, for nationals, 1,046,312 million were declared and for foreigners, 132,520 thousand were declared. Statistics from the Department of Statistics Malaysia states that among the population in 2010 and beyond, the number of elderly people aged 65 years and above reaches 1,425.1, 5.0%. It is therefore estimated that in the near future of 2015 the number of elderly people will reach 1,779.9, equal to 5.8%. Therefore, it offers advantages to service providers in acquiring potential customers as these type of people look for better services and goods. Therefore, the increase in disposable income of older people represents great potential and significance for consumer industries (Bai, Jang, Cai, & O'Leary, 2001; Faranda & Schmidt, 1999; Marvel, 1999). According to factor b. ..... half of the document ...... so as to make profits and allow these people to fully understand their leisure travel. However, rather than the above discussion, this research is heavily based on secondary data collected from past research carried out in various countries. There is only one research conducted in Malaysia (Kamaruddin, 2008) and this study is heavily based on travel transportation and travel concerns of the senior market. Therefore, if there was a chance to further this research on the motivation of elderly travelers in Malaysia, this could easily benefit the tourism industry in catering to these people. To have more specific data in future research, a primary data search should be conducted. In other words, a broad and comprehensive investigation of the travel scenario and pattern of the senior market regarding travel motivation and satisfaction with leisure travel..
