Analysis on Pride and PrejudiceFilm version of Pride and PrejudiceThe original screenplay of "Pride and Prejudice" was written by Jane Austen in 1813 during the romanticism and her social background is England of the late 18th century, when social rank was highly valued. Unlike texts, cultural characteristics, social, political changes and history are reflected in the form of images in the film. The original script of "Pride and Prejudice" was first dramatized in 1940 by Robert Z. Leonard and also broadcast on BBC television. This essay will analyze the most recent dramatized version of Joe Wright's "Pride and Prejudice (2005)". There are different opinions on "dramatization". D. Andrew (1976) explained that "dramatization" means "borrowing" an idea from the original screenplay and "transforming" it into the film. On the other hand, W. Geoffrey (1975) suggested three ways to dramatize; 'transposition', 'commentary' and 'analogy'. However, there are dramatized versions that have created a completely new work from the original screenplay. According to Joe Wright's production note, he stated that "the time had come to bring Austen's original story, centered on Lizzie, back in all its glory to the big screen for audiences around the world to enjoy." Therefore, what could draw the director's attention to this novel is the popularity of the novel that can be loved by everyone. Additionally, the film allows audiences to actually see and hear features such as the bygone image of 18th century England that only existed in text or photo format. For example, the music played, the clothes and suits they wear, and the means of transportation they travel are shown in the film while the original texts describe these characteristics in detail.
