When I think about leadership and what it means to be a good leader, one person in my life strikes me; Mrs. Cynthia Kelly. I feel he embodies the essence of what I have learned about good leadership and demonstrates his passion for cultivating his followers to be the best they can, in a multitude of different contexts and environments. Ms. Kelly was just promoted to the title of Director of Events at Ellen Michael's Presents (EMP), Inc. (an event planning company) in Los Gatos, California. This position was created exclusively for her by CEO Ellen Michaels, to allow Ms. Michaels to retire and to adjust the management of the newly expanded company and supervision of all of its employees to now fall on the shoulders of Ms. Kelly . Ms Kelly is now in charge of the multi-million dollar company she has been a part of for almost 14 years. EMP has been a leading global event planning company for over 25 years and has managed to grow 30% in recent years. years, despite the recession and global corporate cuts to the event organization business. EMP is a relatively small company, with an employee base of around 20 (excluding external suppliers), however it offers a very high level of service and quality that few larger companies can match and EMP's values are unmatched. “Our goal is to deliver exceptional events that advance your culture, achieve your goals, earn your trust, and exceed your expectations” (EMP mission statement) (C. Kelly, personal communication, November 15, 2013). Kelly's commitment and dedication to providing the highest quality of service to not only his customers, but also his employees. He lives by this creed and... middle of paper... ate specially for her so he could run the main business while the owners were semi-retired. She is also highly qualified and an expert in her field and therefore may also hold some expert power. People admire her and seek her wisdom and advice, but it is her personality and the way she treats them that they look to more than her title. She does not hire internal members (only outside vendors for events), nor does she control raises or promotions (Ms. Michaels still holds that power), however she does hold some reward power in that she always makes sure people get the credit they deserve and a recommendation to Mrs. Michaels would prove very valuable. Overall, I believe Ms. Kelly is a very effective leader as she is adaptable, well organized, highly respected and truly cares about her followers and the work she does.
