Reflecting the academic journey to pursue excellence IntroductionPeople learn by doing or studying at home, school, society or work field to develop knowledge and skills. The academic institution is one of the environments where people can learn, interact and develop their skills in a structured and standardized format. In the academic path, the student proceeds with the courses and is then evaluated via assignment or exam to evaluate his performance. From this assignment, I realize that most of my learning path to achieve academic excellence is followed according to Zimmerman's self-regulation process (Zimmerman 2002, p.85) of setting goals, using learning strategies and self-monitoring. This self-reflection essay itself is part of the self-monitoring process. Setting a Goal In the first session of the Skill Development Workshop (SDW), the facilitator gave me a sheet of paper on which to write my short-term and long-term goal. I was not ready to set a global goal because I did not realize its importance until Zimmerman (2002) showed its importance in pursuing excellence. My company offers me a scholarship to develop the skills of its employees based on academic knowledge according to the needs of the organization. As a middle manager, my pragmatic goal and motivation for accepting the scholarship is to develop my professional competence and gain a competitive advantage. Using the Rokeach Values survey (Rokeach, 1973) at SDW, my preference for terminal values also pertains to personal competence. Most of the courses in three semesters aim to improve my professional skills related to my job in Central Bank which are economics, finance and banking. Later, I found that this course (MGMT5050) not only improves the identification and resolution of my problems, but also builds... middle of the paper... a level of self-regulation that mastered the last two levels are more inspiring . I have to master the level of self-control and self-regulation that emphasizes the process and the result subsequently at the same time because the stakeholders demand the result. Before that, I should integrate the knowledge and experience of one and a half years of academic career with my previous work experiences of 13 years. Secondly, business problems become more complex, so I should apply and combine appropriate models considering multiple factors before judging a high-quality decision. I have an obligation to share all knowledge, experience and virtue not only in the workplace, but also in my family as a father and in society as a responsible citizen. Furthermore, to be an authentic leader and influence people, I should practice virtue consistently at home, in society and in the workplace.
