Subsequently, he left Calypso and ended up with a witch goddess, Circe, with whom he stayed for a year. While all this was going on, he had a wife and son in Ithaca. Odysseus is a smart, strong and courageous man, some people will call him a hero, but he is also a trickster and a liar. When he left to fight in the Trojan War, he left behind his wife and his only son. While living the double life sleeping with Calypso and Circe; Penelope was a caring wife. She remained faithful to her husband because she couldn't see herself being with anyone else. Penelope's husband had been gone for twenty years, so she remained chaste until her husband returned. When suitors came to her door to ask for her hand in marriage, she rejected them because she knew she had made a vow to remain committed "in sickness and in health through death, let us."
