Facebook and other social media platforms have taken communication around the world to a whole new level. The advent of social media has created a space where children can communicate with others in both positive and negative ways. While it has had a positive impact on America's youth, it has also helped exacerbate bullying in our schools. This new form of bullying, often called cyberbullying, has created a 24-hour atmosphere where bullying can occur even when school is not in session. Many professionals have tried to address the negative aspects of social media and have worked to develop a solution to end cyberbullying. In addition to cyberbullying, there are many other negative outcomes for young Americans from using social media sites like Facebook. For example, many teens use abbreviations and abbreviations when writing or communicating online. Furthermore, teenagers get lost in social media, ignore their surroundings and even become addicted to social media. The consequences of this include increased obesity, devaluation of the family, lack of exercise, and decreased focus on school and homework. Adolescents who use social media more often than others are more prone to “narcissistic tendencies”, “anxiety, depression and other psychological disorders” (Protalinski, 2011). Young Americans who share more online also exhibit manic, aggressive and antisocial behaviors. Cyberbullying has increased with the birth of social media sites and the rise of the Internet. Although statistics regarding cyberbullying vary widely, ten to forty percent or more of teenagers have reportedly been victims of online bullying.
