Topic > Metric Conversion: The Metric System - 1238

Justin DodgeT. ManleyELA 12-8-2014Metric ConversionOver 96% of the world uses the metric system. The United States, however, decides to isolate itself from the rest of the world and uses the standard US customary system. Why did the United States choose to do this? There are many benefits to using the metric system. Although the US customary system forms the backbone of American measurement and prevents the country from spending more money upfront, it is hurting the United States in many ways. The metric system is a better alternative because it is, first and foremost, an easier system to understand, it is used in most of the world and will also help us connect with the world and save money. Therefore, a national switch to the metric system would be the best decision the country could make to help its students, its finances, and its future. Perhaps the most important reason why the United States should change the metric system is because it would be the single most important metric system. beneficial conversion to the health and prosperity of the economy. According to the Nation Institute of Standards and Technology, “Because trade and communication with other nations are critical to the health of the economy, adopting the measurement system used by 95% of the world's population is not a matter of choice, but a matter of necessity for the United States” (“Toward a Metric America”). The interpretation of this quote is that, as the only “industrialized” country left in the world that has not yet converted to the metric system, the United States is largely behind economically. Many countries have difficulty trading with the United States due to the difference in measurement languages. In addition to that, the earls... in the middle of the paper... claim it as their official measurement system, and still use it in their lives. Therefore, the United States' transition from the standard customary system to the metric system would benefit the country in more ways than one. Students will be less stressed and will not be forced to learn as much. Teachers will no longer be forced to teach two different measurement systems and expect children to understand them. Not to mention it will allow you to associate with the rest of the world much more easily through measurement charts. While switching from the standard system will cost the country a fair amount of money, it will save the United States billions per year over time. Overall the metric system has proven itself more than worthy enough to allow the United States to convert its official measurement system as well. So why is the US limited to benefits??
