In the stories "The Story of an Hour" and The Yellow Wallpaper the images, symbolism, change and tone of these stories explain that women face and conflict between their personal freedom and identity in marriage. The women in these stories are seen as strong and do whatever it takes to free themselves from their husbands. In “The Story of an Hour,” irony is found in the way Louise reacts to the news of her husband's death. The widow describes the world according to her perception, after the horrible news. She accepts it and goes to her room to be alone (Pike & Acosta (2014). Now in her room, Louise sinks into the chair and looks out the window. The widow Louise is looking out the window and sees the spring and all the rest. the life it brings. The descriptions used now are far from death. "The delicious breath of the rain, the notes of a distant song, the sparrows sang and patches of blue sky." opened in the story symbolizes Louise's freedom and the opportunities that awaited her and she didn't have to answer to anyone Louise's excitement about this is shown by the explanation of her physical reaction: increased pulse, relaxation of muscles and look in her eyes. At one point she was called Mrs. Mallard, and now she is her own person, with an independent identity. Louise's heart problem is a symbolic illness that shows her dissatisfaction in her marriage and her unhappiness for the lack of freedom. The widow whispers "Free, free, free!" She realized that although she had loved her husband at times, she has her freedom, a state of being to which all creatures aspire. She gets excited and begins to fantasize about them...... middle of paper ...... to feel like a prisoner inside this sheet. The narrator wife shows that her husband John is oppressive when she shows how afraid she is of him. She says, "Here comes John, and I must put this away: he hates to make me write a word" (Pike & Acosta (2014). The wife at last "I've come out at last," I said, "in spite of you and Jane. part of the paper, so you can't take me back!" (Pike & Acosta (2014). In "The Story of an Hour by Chopin" it is pointed out that the main character Louise was also disappointed in her husband, even though he was never stated openly in the story. Unjust treatment plays an important role in understanding the theme of liberation in the stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Story of an Hour.” Works CitedPike, David L. and Acosta, Ana M.
