Martin, Andrew and Andrew W. Lehren. “A Generation Hobbled by Soaring College Costs.” The New York Times. May 12, 2012. August 31, 2016 Martin and Lehren's article “A Generation Hobbled by the Soaring Cost of College” addresses the problem faced by current and former college students dealing with large amounts of student loan debt. The article presents the reader with stories of former college students who have graduated or dropped out and their struggle to repay their student loans. The article also talks about issues such as students not being informed about high student loan amounts and why student debt has increased. Martin and Lehren also make the issue of student debt more intimidating by providing examples. The article addresses the issue of college debt by preventing graduates from taking out loans on other items such as a car or house. He claims that this claim is false and that within about two years of graduation, students have paid off their debts enough to be able to make these purchases. One example used is a study conducted by TransUnion between two groups; one with college debt and one without. Study results show that the group with student loans ended up having a better origination rate percentage with their purchases after two years than the group without Dec 1, 2014 Sep 7, 2016 "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Loans student” refers to many great loan points that recent graduates or future graduates should pursue. These include paying your student loans in full and on time, as well as considering refinancing. The main purpose of the article is to help graduates prepare to repay their student loans accurately and correctly. He chooses to focus on the positive aspects of repaying student loans, giving hope to those who may be worried about paying them back. While helpful, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Student Loans” is very repetitive in its information. For example, the article has two separate paragraphs stating that it is a good idea to pay off your student debt in full. While this is an important point for all current and former college students, it doesn't need to be said twice. The article also severely lacks support on how each of the points raised can help. There is very little evidence or examples as to why these are good points to follow. However, despite the lack of evidence, the article offers useful suggestions that should definitely be taken into consideration
