“I am spiritual but not religious.” In today's society, it is a trendy phrase that many people often use to describe their belief that they do not need to affiliate with an organized religion to live a faithful and fulfilling life. As life becomes more hectic and chaotic, people say they don't have the time to engage in organized religious activity and are turning to a different alternative, which may be less limiting and narrow-minded. While spirituality means something different to everyone, at its essence, spirituality provides our lives with context. It comes from the connection you have with yourself and the search for meaning in life. Spirituality can take many different forms, such as meditation and yoga, while for others it can be found in nature or in a secular community. These, along with different qualities of spirituality such as hope and forgiveness, can have many benefits that aid overall mental health by improving coping skills, fostering feelings of optimism, and encouraging a sense of relaxation. Despite this progression towards spirituality, religious debates have erupted in response to the phrase “I am spiritual but not religious.” The distinction between spirituality and religion, and what these terms have come to mean to many people, has gained greater importance in recent years, with many people withdrawing from religious affiliation and participating in spiritual practices that improve their mental health and general physics. Because of the way society works nowadays, many people have no need to affiliate with or engage in some type of religious activity and often turn to some form of spiritual activity as a quick fix to life stress. The Pew Research...... half of the paper ...... once this conscious relationship has been forged, this connection can be brought into everyday life, imbuing our lives with meaning. Unlike religion, spirituality allows for the discovery of one's authentic self without labels, which provides a deeper meaning to life, whatever one's religion. Spirituality highlights many qualities such as kindness, generosity, tolerance and faith, and the same goes for religion. However, while religion is defined by its teachings, spirituality is defined by our experiences that arise from the internal search for our truth and not by what we are taught. Finally, it can also be said that religion tends to produce separation, while spirituality places everyone on the same level. People should not be labeled with this “ism” or that “ism”. Instead, people are spiritual beings whose purpose is to discover our self and our purpose.
