A human resources manager at the banking organization's headquarters identified 55 branch or department managers in the bank with similar levels of responsibility and a similar number of direct relationships. Managers who had held their role for less than three months were excluded from the study. The human resources manager then randomly selected four direct reports of each sample manager (208 subordinates in total) as followers in this study. The researchers sent the surveys to the sampled subordinates, and the completed surveys were returned directly to the researchers via mail. In total, there were 193 surveys
