Topic > Animal experiments: the ethical problem of animal testing

Seeing photos of suffering animals locked in laboratory cages is heartbreaking. Every year more than 100 million animals are used in scientific research (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA, 2011). They wait in pain, fear and loneliness with tubes and chemicals in their bodies for the day of freedom that doesn't even exist. Being the sacrifices of animal testing, they are used to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medicines, cosmetic products and also to explore how the human body works (Murnaghan, 2011). Animal testing refers to the use of non-human animals in experiments. The problem of animal testing is heartbreaking; However, by pushing government agencies to stop funding animal experiments, enforcing animal rights law, and educating the public, it is believed this trend could be stopped. Animal testing is a deeply rooted problem as many scientific fields have used animals in their research for a long time, from testing drugs, foods, cosmetics to medical experiments in universities. Animals are treated inhumanely and cruelly during these tests. They are forced to inhale toxic smoke, have harsh chemicals applied to their eyes and skin, or undergo brain and eye surgery (PETA, 2011). In 2010, 1.28 million animals and 100 million mice and rats were used in experiments in the United States (US Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, 2011). Most of the animals used in the research died during the experiments or were killed afterwards. There are some important factors that contribute to the spread of animal testing. One cause is the similarity that humans and animals share. In fact, animals are treated as a... means of paper... of respect for animal rights. The Consumer Council should promote “cruelty-free labelling” so that consumers catch their attention when shopping. Education has a lasting effect because it could change the value set of the entire generation. Even though education may not have an immediate effect on the situation, it is still believed that this could solve the problem in the long run as it will increase public attention and decrease the demand for such products. While the problem of animal testing is devastating, it is treatable by ending funding that supports inhumane experiments, enforcing the law to protect animal rights, and educating the general public. We cannot and must no longer tolerate cruel animal testing. Everyone, including the government, companies and the public, should take responsibility and fight for animal rights.
