After you graduate from college, you will apply for a job you went to college for. Even though you may be the most qualified for the job, you still may not get the position. Affirmative action sometimes causes this because companies must hire a certain number of minorities relative to the size of the company. This means that if there are no minority citizens available, immigrants who are not even U.S. citizens can take the position. This is why Affirmative Action should be repurposed, because it helps immigrants instead of the people it was intended for, American citizens. The fact is that the current Affirmative Action plan is helping immigrants more than the American people. For example, millions of immigrants and foreign visitors are eligible for Affirmative Action benefits, and many are actually using them, to benefit U.S.-born minorities because they don't have enough U.S. minorities to fill the positions. In fact, many of today's immigrants come to this country and move straight to the front of the line. James Robb, senior analyst at The Social Contract, a quarterly magazine and author of the study “Affirmative Action For Immigrants: The Entitlement Everyone Wanted” provided a great example of how immigrants use affirmative action to their advantage. It states: “Of all U.S. science doctorates awarded in 1993, 46 percent went to foreigners. There have been ten scientific PhDs awarded to Asian non-citizens, for every one awarded to an Asian American” (Robb). It doesn't end there, because after obtaining their doctorate, many immigrants will remain in the United States to find work. This is bad for American citizens who have earned their doctorates because they have difficulty finding jobs, many of which are already occupied by people who are not even US citizens. It's a big deal that immigrants use Affirmative Action to their advantage. There is something wrong with giving opportunities to non-US citizens instead of US citizens. Yes, this is a big problem because if you put noncitizens and US citizens in the same job market, you take away opportunities from people who have lived here their whole lives. This creates a feeling of hatred between US and non-US citizens, which is the last thing we need. On the contrary, there is nothing wrong with giving job opportunities to immigrants because this is America, the lan...... middle of paper ......active action would count if and only if are minority citizens, which would give American citizens a better chance of finding work because immigrants would not be accepted than the number of minorities companies have to hire. After this paragraph is added, the president is expected to sign an executive order stating that, although contractors may hire immigrants, only U.S.-born minorities will count toward meeting the goals set by affirmative action. I think this would solve the problem of hiring non-citizen immigrants. By reading the facts and opinions in this article, I think you will understand that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Affirmative action is not doing its part of what it was originally created to do. Steps must be taken to correct this wrong, so that people who deserve a chance, in turn, receive a chance.
