Topic > Using Wikis in Education - 1789

The prevalence of online tools in education is increasing exponentially. Sener (2010) cites an increase in online course enrollments from 1.6 million in 2002 to 5.6 million in 2009. Moloney and Oakley (2010) predict a 20% annual increase in online education participants over the next few years. To meet the needs of an ever-changing student population, teachers must be aware of the myriad of tools available to enhance learning. This paper presents the use of wikis in education and evaluates the effectiveness of the wiki according to Chickering and Gamson's seven principles of good practice (as cited in Hoskins, 2010). Introduction to WikisThe wiki is a browser-based editing program that allows multiple users to contribute and edit text. It includes word processor-like editing tools that allow the user to control the size and color of text, make text bold or italic, and insert web links and images. Changes are tracked by the software, and subsequent changes can be tracked or even reverted to a previous version. The program allows email notification of changes made as chosen by the user in their account settings (Cunningham, 2002; Crocker, Hutchings, Nussey, Park, & Springate, 2010). In education, wikis are useful as they allow open editing of a document. If a student sees an error, he or she can simply edit the text. Crocker et al. (2010) mention graduate students' limited knowledge of wikis, but point out that interaction on the wiki creates a dialogue among students that enhances their learning. Wiki activity is useful to educators because it promotes contact and cooperation among students, encourages active learning, and ensures timely feedback from other users.
