My culture in the past seemed more serious and less talkative than today. Back then in my culture we listened more and waited for our turn to speak, unlike today's generation, sometimes we may interrupt the person speaking to express our personal opinion or talk about how we reacted emotionally to the topic. Also, in the past, in Native American culture, we never really expressed our thoughts and emotions to anyone, if it's a random person we can't express ourselves unless it's someone from our family or who we've known for a long time time. What I mentioned about how my culture in the past of being quieter and listening instead of talking, is our display rules. The definition of display rules is “when people in a given culture agree on what forms of managing and communicating emotions are socially desirable and appropriate” (McCornack 119). The display rules from personal experience that I was taught while growing up were to never express my emotions too much to the point where it might become disrespectful to others, such as responding to talking to an older relative with a attitude.
