Topic > Internet Censorship: Necessary or Harmful? - 530

This quote from Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, sums up what an experiment the Internet is. An economy over which, until recently, governments thought they had control. Just like Doctor Frankenstein and his monster, humanity is amazed and disgusted by our creation. It is perhaps the most beautiful and disgusting thing that has ever come out of the mind of man. With the creation of the Internet came a new generation of people and languages. Just as social media, search engines and websites are words that didn't make sense even to a person who lived twenty years ago, they have permeated normal conversations. Sometimes people tend to forget that Google, perhaps the symbol of the Internet, is only 15 years old. The Internet is new, influential and above all growing at a rapid pace. The Internet is dangerous for governments, the Internet is an activist for every cause and a revolutionary against every government. Many have blamed the riots in Egypt on social media and chat rooms. The internet is a wealth of knowledge for anyone who asks, regardless of the background of their intentions, and this has only gotten worse over the years. This means that even the average person can at any time find information, sometimes reliable, sometimes not, that incriminates their government. . If the government were a person, the Internet would be the big bad wolf at the door. If the government does something, several sites claiming ulterior motives will appear overnight. The Internet is the bane of corrupt or repressive governments. There are of course many other reasons to block certain websites and protect them from some of the web's content. One of the most common arguments in favor of Internet censorship is pornography. Pornography accounts for approximately 11% of the Internet and 25% of all Internet searches. While some people may not care at all about the Internet pornography debate, many parents are up in arms about their children's possible exposure. The average first exposure to Internet porn occurs at age eleven and gets younger and younger. Some parents use private filters and website blockers, but with the rise of pornographic sites it becomes increasingly difficult to hide children from this influence. For this reason many people have called for immediate government action regarding these types of websites and images. Another of the arguments in favor of Internet censorship is the growing amount of piracy on the Internet..
