Andy, a graduate of Brown University, always dreamed of becoming an editor, so she moved to the big city of New York in hopes of finding an editorial job there. She was offered a job as second assistant to Miranda, the British editor-in-chief of a huge fashion magazine. Andy was not very hip and had little knowledge in the industry, but she decided to take the job because this job could later get her into a publishing business. With this new job she works a lot and her relationship with Alex, her boyfriend, becomes complicated. To make matters worse; Miranda's first assistant, Emily, becomes ill with mononucleosis and Andy must travel to Paris with Miranda. During this trip to Paris with Miranda, Andy is asked to do several difficult tasks for her and she becomes very stressed. While still in Paris, Andy receives a phone call stating that Lily, her best friend, is in a coma after wrecking her car while driving drunk. On the bright side of the story, Miranda is pleased with Andy and tells her that her future is bright and that she will call a publishing house and refer Andy to them. At the fashion show Miranda gives Andy yet another impossible task from Miranda. With all the bad things happening to Andy, she finally realizes that her family and friends are more important than anything in the world, so s... middle of paper... In the book, the name of Andy's boyfriend Andy is Alex and he is an elementary school teacher and in the book, Andy's boyfriend's name is Nate and he is a cook in a restaurant. Andy graduated from Brown University, but in the book she graduated from Northwestern University. In the film, Lily never gets drunk and ends up in a coma. Miranda is British in the book but American in the film. Andy's relationship with her boyfriend is officially over, but it is suggested in the book that their romance may be rekindled. Andy has blonde hair in the book and brunette in the movie. Lily's personality in the book is very different from that of the movie. In the novel she is always with many men, drinks a lot and tells Andy that it is okay to be with Christian without having any guilt. However, in the book Lily is a serious, sloppy person who doesn't like seeing Christian.
