Topic > Boeing 787 Case Study - 1214

The NTSB had previously issued safety recommendations to the FAA regarding (1) insufficient test methods and guidelines to address the safety risks of internal shorts and thermal runaway, and (2 ) the need for external technical knowledge and expertise to help the FAA ensure the safe introduction of new technologies into aircraft design (NTSB, 2014). In response to the accident, Boeing added “triple layer” protections to lithium-ion batteries (Aviation Week, 2013). Additional electrical isolation of the cells and cable management significantly reduce the likelihood of short circuits. The entire battery now has a 1/8 inch steel case designed to contain any combustion or explosion. There is also a vent tube to allow gases to escape
