When trumpets were first used, they were distinguished from anything that might suggest "music". They were commonly used to signal a message or instructions over a great distance. These signals would consist of a series of sounds or rhythmic patterns. Eventually the trumpets would herald the arrival of royalty as noble employers, kings or rulers, and ambassadors. They were used for maneuvers in wartime, peaceful times and tournaments. Eventually, as the trumpet's ability to play more notes increased, they were finally considered "art music". Trumpets now played in ceremonies and celebrations as part of musical ensembles. The uses of trumpets began minimally but increased greatly with the ability to play more notes during the Renaissance
