Topic > Walter T. Stace Meaning of Free Will - 1493

Walter T. Stace uses several examples in his essay about people who do not act according to free will and about people who act according to free will to try to demonstrate that indeterminism does not it's the definition of free will and trying to get the definition right. He gives examples showing cases where the question is asked whether the man acted with free will. One of the examples he uses to try to find the correct definition of free will is to ask the man if he stole while acting with free will. In one of the cases the man replies “yes, I stole the bread because I was hungry”. and in the other the man replies “no, I stole because my employer threatened to beat me if I didn't” (Barnet). Another example he uses is asking a man if he hasn't eaten for an entire week of his own free will, in one case the man replies “no, I was lost in the desert and couldn't find any food”, and in the Nell case In another case the man replies: “yes, I did it because I wanted to force the British government to give India its independence”
