Because the media reaches such a large audience, it is easy to influence people's beliefs about the level of crime by reporting big headlines with a recent crime that can influence how a person's belief about crime in that area and that it is increasing. Studies have shown that a large percentage of the public depends on the media as a source of information about crime and forms their opinions about crime based on what they see or read in the media.
