Introduction on Child Maltreatment: This essay will investigate the global issue of child maltreatment, what it is, its history, the problems it causes and some possible solutions. Child maltreatment is the mistreatment of children sexually, physically, or through neglect. Many people do not see the potential harm of hitting children for the sake of discipline, unaware of the psychological and long-term damage they are causing. Many people who experience abuse at a young age still suffer as adults and are more likely to experience psychological problems and harmful behaviors. (www.who.int – 05/03/2013). Victims of abuse are also more likely to become abusers themselves in the future. History: When talking about child abuse throughout history, it is important to recognize that the well-being of children has not always been a concern. It wasn't until the mid-1800s that laws supporting children's rights existed. During the 19th century in Britain, many families believed that it was more important for their children to work and earn money, rather than to receive an education. It was cheaper and easier to hire a child than an adult. (www.thenationalarchives.gov.uk – 30/03/2013). Therefore child labor was very common. In 1833 a law required textile mills to provide at least two hours of instruction to children under the age of 13. (www.thenationalarchives.gov.uk – 30/03/2013). Problems: Child abuse is still a problem that affects thousands of people today. of children around the world. Although there are laws that protect children from child labor and abuse, and despite a better understanding of why children should not work instead of receive an education, there are still many cases of child labor and abuse. Over 158 million children are exploited in...... middle of paper ......tions: The solution to help limit or end child maltreatment is primarily to raise awareness of how serious this problem is for those who don't. understand the extent of the damage to which the victim is subjected. Child maltreatment, whether sexual, physical, or due to neglect, affects victims for the rest of their lives. Many people who were abused at a young age become abusers themselves later, which creates a cycle of abuse and suffering. There should be laws that protect children from abuse globally and harsh consequences for those who break them. There should also be centers where abused children can be helped, providing shelter and medical care to those injured. To help reduce cases where children are forced to work to support their families, financial aid should be provided that allows children to go to school, while their families continue to be supported.
