Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes is a documentary created and produced by Bryon Hurt. The documentary challenges dominant discourses on hypermasculinity and the misogynistic treatment of women in commercialized rap. Among the many mainstream phenomena Bryon discusses in the documentary, the issue of hypermasculinity in hip hop is strongly questioned. Throughout the film, the producer managed to show the wide acceptance of hypermasculinity not only in hip hop but also in American culture. He defined America as a hypermasculine and hyperviolent nation because the use of a gun to defend one's family has become a metaphor for masculinity and an instrument of widespread violence. The issue of hypermasculinity can be integrated with racism and is rooted in the living conditions and environment that occurred alongside slavery.
