Bell opposes this point of view and argues that there is no good art or bad art. In Bell's excerpt he states, “In pure aesthetics we have no right, nor is there any necessity, to pry behind the object into the state of mind of the one who made it” (Bell 188). Bell argues that individuals should express themselves about what they think is art, without being judged by others. Good art has a strong impact on others because it expresses its meaning clearly with a high degree of sincerity, while bad art lacks unity and clarity. When the recipient feels more pleasure, he would be deeply affected by the artist. But if the artist failed to convey the feelings experienced, the recipient would reject them. Tolstoy emphasizes that “the presence in varying degrees of these three conditions: individuality, clarity and sincerity, decides the merit of a work of art, as art, apart from which they satisfy the first, second and third of these conditions" (Tolstoy 181). Tolstoy states that when we successfully convey our emotions to another individual, people come together as one. He concludes that art is extremely important to human life because it teaches us how to communicate our thoughts clearly and sincerely. But it is art by Cynthia Freeland, a philosopher named Immanuel Kant
