The film Blood Diamond depicts the fights and wars over “conflict diamonds” that occurred in Sierra Leone at the time. It was directed by Edward Zwick and filmed in Sierra Leone, Mozambique and South Africa. The film's main characters are Solomon Vandy, an African man captured by RUF rebels to mine diamonds, Danny Archer, a diamond trader and smuggler, and Maddy Bowen, a journalist reporting on events in Sierra Leon at the time. The film Blood Diamond provides an excellent example of the differences in status and class between men and women in Sierra Leon. These differences are not just limited to Sierra Leon; can be extrapolated and applied to most African nations. The main overall difference between men and women in Africa is that men overwhelmingly hold a higher position of power and authority in the home. Men in Africa are considered the protectors and providers of the family. These characteristics can be seen in Solomon Vandy in the film Blood Diamond, when the village is attacked at the beginning of the film. Solomon rushes to help and grows tired of his family...
