Mariam built a mutual relationship with Jalil throughout her childhood, with weekly visits every Thursday. Mariam hid behind a wall of innocence and Jalil helped her break through the wall to the harsh realities of the world. Mariam was an innocent being in childhood: she was stuck at home in Kolba. Mariam doesn't know what's going on around her house because she hasn't experienced the outdoors like others. All he gets is from Jalil's stories and the Mullah's teachings. He doesn't understand that the world is not as happy as it seems. In Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini uses the character of Jalil to show the development in Mariam's life, to highlight how significant the impact of trust breaking Mariam's innocence is in the story. Although Jalil resides in Herat dependent on his life with Nana and Mariam, Jalil still cares for Mariam, even if the story seems like that is not the case. Jalil shows his love by visiting him every Thursday, although he can choose not to stay on Thursdays. Mariam developed a lot of respect for Jalil during her childhood, she waited for him, because she cared for him so much. Nana has never really been fond of Jalil, when she mentions him to Mariam: Mariam doesn't believe it, and Mariam continues to look forward to Jalil. Mariam listens to Jalil's stories, even though all his stories include the good times spent in Herat, Mariam doesn't question why she is stuck in Herat. “It must have been so, because Mariam remembered that that day she had been restless and worried, as she had only been on Thursday, the day Jalil visited her in Kolba.” (Hosseini 50) Hosseini shows how much Mariam loves Jalil: she seems to look forward to meeting Jalil every Thursday. Jalil shows his love by coming and visiting, because as much as I want to come visit, Jalil still does the Thursday visits. Mariam leaves everything and waits for Jalil: this shows the importance of Jalil in her life. Jalil also presents his love by the fact that even though Mariam goes through a lot in her life, he still cares that she loves him. “I thought about you all the time. I prayed that you would live to be a hundred.
