The two hundred million complex opened in 1984 as Harrah's at Trump Plaza. Ironically, he purchased the Holiday Inn and the casino was renamed the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino ("Donald Trump"). “For Trump, each project had to be the best of its kind, and usually combined keen instincts and perfect timing with ruthless negotiations” (Shepard 84). Despite all the success he achieved in his real estate business, in 1990 the real estate market collapsed dramatically. This decline reduced the value of Trump's real estate empire from an estimated two billion dollars to five hundred million! Trump had to rely on loans just to keep his real estate from collapsing.
