According to Biology Online, animal testing is defined as the use of animals in experiments and development projects usually to determine the toxicity, dosing and efficacy of drugs tested before to proceed with clinical studies on humans. Animal experimentation has been going on since ancient Greece, when Aristotle and Hippocrates first made their model of the human body based on what they had observed through dissecting animals. So, the Romans used animals to perform psychological tests on animals such as pigs, monkeys, and dogs. Subsequently, the Renaissance period resumed physiological studies. Since then, the 20th century saw a huge increase in animal testing until 1980, when activists began to oppose the laboratories. In some cases activists have not been very successful in protecting animal rights and in recent decades there has been a notable increase in animal testing for many reasons (Baumans). Today, despite the efforts of activists, animal testing is still commonly used. However, animal testing is unethical and should be banned. People in favor of animal testing believe that animals are necessary for any kind of medical progress. They believe that without live animal testing, our medical field would not be able to make improvements. Scientists assume that humans would be greatly handicapped if they did not test drugs on animals before they were released into the human world. They also think that animals are tested to perform various behavioral and genetic tests. People in favor of animal testing are under the impression that animals are a great help to psychologists in learning more about the brain and how the human brain works. They think that without animals, no one would be able to fully understand how the… medium of paper… age works. aavs.org, 2010. Web. 16 November 2010..Bantwal, Natasha.
