Success. Some long for it with all their hearts; others search for it to the ends of the earth, but end up not even finding what they are looking for. Is it possible that they are having trouble finding what they are looking for because they don't know exactly what they are looking for? Merriam Webster's dictionary defines success as “the obtaining or attainment of wealth, respect, or fame; the correct or desired result of an attempt, someone or something being successful.” Unfortunately, even within this definition there are concepts that are difficult to explain and explore. “Correct” is a subjective term and there is almost never a correct way to do something. How can you be successful at something without there being an absolute way to determine success? I believe that success is a subjective term and that society develops its own individual basis for determining its meaning. It is a definition that changes within each individual's personality and conforms to their needs and desires (2014). Obadassi Battal, a writer for the International Journal of Academic Research, wrote an article titled The Effect of Learned Helplessness of the Success. He discovers intriguing cognitive correlations between learning ability and success. Following a group of students from the fourth grade onwards, he developed an interesting hypothesis. He believes that, with few exceptions, people build their own perspective on success. In other words, you can exactly control your success (or at least “think” you have) by shaping and building a worldview. Battal believes that, aside from instinctive reactions or reflexes, humans learn all things naturally. This source showed how success is not always something that is simply a divine gift bestowed upon a special few, but rather can be taught and learned through a systematic process. By changing the way an individual thinks and learns behavior, the researchers in this article believe that we can influence how the individual perceives and defines success.
