Cyrano the Love of BergeracWhen we think about the force that holds the world together and what makes human beings different from animals, an answer comes to mind: that humans can love. Love is a state of mind that cannot be easily defined but can be experienced by everyone. Love is very complicated. In fact it is so complicated that a person in love can be misunderstood as behaving extremely stupidly by other people. The complexity of love is shown in Rostand's masterpiece Cyrano de Bergerac. This is accomplished by two characters who love the same woman and in the process neither achieves love in absolute perfection. First of all the question arises of what love is. Love is having a sense of security in someone. When we love someone we usually mean that we can turn to that person comfortably if all other doors in the world are closed to us. This is the only person we trust and enjoy being in company with. In the novel Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano loves Roxane more than anyone else, but is shy about telling her. When she discovers her feelings towards another character, Christian, who likes her for his looks, Cyrano finds a way to express his love to Roxane. He decides that he will write to her in the name of Cristiano who is comparatively a poor writer and "he wants to make Cristiano his interpreter" (II,85). Both Cristiano and Cirano love Rossana but Rossana only loves the person who wrote. to her. In reality it was Cyrano who wrote to her but she thinks he was Christian. Cyrano had said: "...And we two make a hero of romance." (II,85) Since Cyrano suffered from an inferiority complex, having a gigantic nose, he was shy in asking Roxana whether she wanted it or not. She had thought she wouldn't like it because of her deformity. One said: "..I adore Beatrice. Do I have / Dante's gaze?" (I,42) What he hadn't considered was that Rossana loved him for who he was from the inside, not from the outside. She had once said to Christian, "If you were less charming, even ugly, I would still love you.
