Emma ZielinskiEnglish 10Ms. Perry5 May 2014Tobacco Use Awareness of tobacco and smoking is important because not many people know or care about the side effects of its use. To help people learn about tobacco and smoking, there are commercials touting the effects of tobacco, as well as organizations to provide people with more knowledge about tobacco. If more commercials were broadcast every day, more attention would be drawn to the harmful effects of tobacco and smoking due to the use of television around the world. Smoking can often lead to multiple heart diseases, and at the end of these diseases, you can develop a heart attack or stroke (“Smoking and Health Problems”). While it's obvious that smoking isn't the best thing for a person's health, how much do people really know? This problem is huge for many people. Even if someone doesn't smoke, being in the presence of someone who smokes could impact the health of nonsmokers. Tobacco use can cause approximately eleven different types of cancer, including mouth cancer, throat cancer, and leukemia (“Smoking and Health Problems”). “If you are a regular smoker, you are 250 times more likely to be killed by its effects before age 65 than to be killed” (Ward 17). Almost immediately after inhaling cigarette smoke, a film remains on the teeth that takes on a dark, dirty color. Unlike the short-term effect, a never-ending consequence of tobacco inhalation is the thick, dark tar it leaves in the lungs after each use of a cigarette (Beil). Overall, smoking is unhealthy and can cause many health problems, if a person knew all the effects of tobacco and smoking, they might change their mind about taking the next thing... in the middle of a sheet of paper... .if some substance.Even if smoking isn't the best thing for you, how interested are people in knowing the effects of tobacco? It is important to understand why tobacco and smoking are harmful and what they do to the human body. There are alternatives to smoking tobacco, but do these alternatives help the average smoker when it comes to quitting? If a law were to be passed, tobacco consumption would decrease and perhaps save many lives. It may take years, but some holes are easier to repair than others and the wait may be worth it.
