China and Iran had the highest number of confirmed executions in 2014 (Death Penalty Focus). On the contrary, several countries such as Sweden and Spain have declared that this punishment is barbaric and constitutes a violation of fundamental human rights. The actual number of executions in China is unknown and considered a state secret. By hiding information such as execution rates, China shows fear of ruining its image with such brutal practices (Death Penalty Worldwide). Although capital punishment has not yet been abolished in Kenya, there have been no executions since the hanging of Pancras coup plotters Oteyo Okumu and Hezekiah Ochuka in 1986.
