The peasants' discontent in the period 1870 – 1900 had an impact on their attitude and actions towards politics. During this period the manufacturing industry experienced a surge of growth and agriculture began to decline. This has made it more difficult for farmers to earn a decent living. For example, in document G you can see how much production has increased in the last 50 years. America could no longer dream of being a nation of small farm ownership. Producers and people living in large cities depended on farmers to provide everything. Many people didn't realize the impact farmers had on their lives. If someone had taken the farms away, everything would have collapsed completely. Farmers had difficulty making a living because the fees for being a farmer were high. “Nothing has done more harm to the Western region than these shipping rates.” (Quoted from Document F) The high rates of being a farmer made it very difficult to make payments on the lands. Some farmers couldn't even sell their produce at a reasonable profit. They worked long hours and the government was not on their side in paying them a decent income. Along with falling agricultural prices, rail prices were rising. Railroads were very important to farmers because they brought farmers to their lands, transported their products to markets, and brought them the manufactured goods they needed. Many agricultural settlements were built around the railways for this reason. Railway managers were forced to charge very high fares and because of this farmers had to pay more to use the railways. In those days agriculture was the main offering of a country. The crops that farmers produce basically constituted the only food supply. This makes farmers a very important part of society. The farmers return...... to the center of the paper...... farmers. They were losing land for railroad manufacturing. To solve this solution, the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 was passed. The Supreme Court would rule that individual states cannot regulate interstate commerce and discriminate against out-of-state businesses. Additionally, President Cleveland was forced to cede the land to the public. The 1892 election was won by Cleveland (D). He had brought new ideas and was a source of inspiration for everyone, including the opposing parties. Cleveland had the majority of votes, especially those from the East Coast which has major plantations (Document D). Cleveland promised great hope to the people. He was said to have good sense and was able to provide social stability especially being accompanied by McKinley (Document I). Cleveland eventually simply turned the land over to farmers due to complaints from the railroads.
