Existentialism is an expression of the belief that man creates his existence through choice and action. The individual is put at the centre. The philosophy of existentialism is that man has the right to freedom, but must also take responsibility for his life choices. This can be transferred to the fact that every man has his own luck. The short story Tørdokken was written in 1949 by German author Stefan Andres. It was translated into Danish in 1995 by Mogens Grandenwitz. Tørdokken was written in the period known as the war and interwar period, this period is from 1940 to 1960. Although Tørdokken was written in the war period and interwar period, this is not the case. they deal with this period, but the entire second one, that is, the end of the 18th century. “The first dry dock in Toulon was built at the end of the 18th century” The tale Tørdokken is written as a story. In the first part we talk briefly about the dry dock and the custom that led to its invention by Grognard. In part 2 the story is told of how a selected galley slave must break down the supports under the ship, if they can do it without dying, they can be free. If they don't make it, they will be crushed by the ship. In part 3, the dry dock is built and the consequences of its behavior and use are seen. The dry dock is written in the third-person narrator, which is related to Grognard. “He knew that his ridiculousness would be sealed if he revealed the true driving force behind this great plan” (lines 64-66) The quote above obviously says that the narrator is personally attached to Grognard, but that there is also an internal point of view on him, as we do in the story to get an idea of Gorgnard's thoughts, as we do in the corrosive quote The reason why Tørdokken, in terms of genre, was set to v...... half of paper......better if it had been a human being Galejslaven put themselves in this tragic situation. According to existentialism, every man is his luck, which means that the convict himself is responsible for his tragic death because of the choices he made. In the story, Grognard is also his fortune. Based on the promise he made to himself to build the dry dock, he made a choice that takes him in a certain direction. The direction can be changed by making new choices, but he sticks to his decision, which ends with him losing his life and having to realize he was wrong. Before he built the dry dock, the galley slaves had a chance at peace or freedom, but he took away their fateful chance of life or death. He took their freedom and chance for peace instead of rotting in a prison and they took his life where he had his freedom.
