The story “Death in the Woods,” written by Sherwood Anderson, is a story told by a man who has told it many times. As a boy in a small town he notices an old woman named Grimes, whose story he will tell us. He was the kind of person no one noticed in town. He led a quiet life and never spoke to anyone except the butcher. The narrator then goes on to describe how she meets her husband Jack Grimes. He was a tough guy she meets while working for an abusive German farmer. The narrator tells you a long story about how he helps her free herself from the violent German. They got together after some incidents and then got married. They had a few children and established their own farm where, as before, she fed the animals, just as she did the Germans. Her husband tried to socialize with the townspeople but it didn't work. Then he rebelled by stealing their horses. He even threatened to fight them after they wouldn't converse with him. Perhaps this was a good reason why one of his sons had already been put in prison, setting a truly good example. Their family, the Grimes, owned a sawmill but, in the last two years, it went bankrupt, so all their money was gone, forcing them to work hard. The young man who narrates then tells us about his encounter with the older woman. One cold winter day he went to town to do some shopping. She went to the butcher, ironically she and the butcher were friendly with each other and he gave her extra food. On the way back through the woods he stopped for a minute to rest because of the heavy bag. She feels asleep and hasn't woken up. She froze to death. His dogs found it here and ate the food from his bag. This is very ironic because all he did was feed animals his whole life. She did this to the German's farm, her farm/family and the dogs and now she is dead because of it. In the story the young man describes how he and the other men came from the city when they found it. He saw her frozen and dead.
