Preface The Titanic was one of three "Olympic-class" ocean liners commissioned by the White Star Line to be built at the Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast. These ships were the industrial wonders of their era. The Titanic was supposed to be the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship ever seen, as well as being unsinkable. “I took a passage on the Titanic because I thought it would be a safe steamer and I had heard it couldn't sink.” (Passenger Margaret Devaney). The Titanic had four elevators, a heated swimming pool, a gym, two libraries, and two barber shops, which was very impressive for a ship of that era. This extraordinary ship was nicknamed "The Ship of Dreams". on board there were suites for different types of passengers that included millionaires, silent film stars, school teachers and emigrants, seeking a better life in North America. This ship was very large especially for the time and included separate areas for rich and poor. The Titanic was scheduled to make a voyage from Southampton, England to New York, United States. Then on the fifth day of her voyage the Titanic was crossing the Atlantic, Captain Edward Smith had charted a new course after hearing previous reports of ice from other ships of the line, there were many more communications that day of ice on the route of the Titanic, that same night of Sunday 14 April 1912. The sea was calm, the sky dark and clear and the temperature was getting colder and colder by the minute. In conditions like these it is very difficult to spot an iceberg. Then, at 11.40pm the lookout sounded the alarm and telephoned the bridge saying: "Iceberg, just ahead." It was already too late to avoid the iceberg and the Titanic began to sink and in less than 40 seconds a series of holes appeared in the hull. It also took 3 ho...... middle of paper..... .it's very emotional for us because in those days children led a very simple life, we didn't eat meals with our parents; we ate them at school or nursery and generally it was very simple food, I suppose, like milk pudding and quite boring things like that, so it was very exciting to have this elaborate food. In second class, children were not allowed access to the gym or swimming pool. The ship also had a library from which books could be borrowed. A ship as large as the Titanic must have been exciting for third class children, even if there weren't many activities for them. Some older children drew or wrote in their journals for fun. Unfortunately, the dreams of many were shattered and the young survivors had to appeal to the strength of adults to face the death of many members of their family. members during the accident (“Life on board”).
