These instincts help the creature survive and cause it to behave in certain ways. This is called innate behavior. However, some things have been taught to animals. Unlike innate behaviors that come from genes, other behaviors must be learned. These are called learned behaviors. Together, innate and learned behaviors can demonstrate that animals are smarter than most people think. For starters, it's an innate behavior when an animal has an instinct to know when to mate and with which species. This is known as courtship behavior.
