Charlotte Bronte writes in the famous novel Jane Eyre: “I am not a bird; and no net traps me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” As the writer shows, freedom of will is ingrained in women and they strive for their independence according to their situation. But most Asian culture advocates for rights and portrays women in worried, beautiful, caring, weak, and undervalued frames. Women are expected to play a conservative role in the community. Above all they considered the "honor" of the family who is responsible for preserving the prestige of the family. Although it is true that women are beautiful, attentive and concerned, the compulsion to determine this characteristic does not necessarily only define the woman. To weaken the subordination of women to men, a group of women opposed violence, leaving the whole world stunned and surprised. This was a diaspora from the Tamil nation of Sri Lanka called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) with women fighters who wanted to overcome social and cultural norms. They have demonstrated to the nation and the entire world that they, as women, are no longer inferior to men. The involvement of Tamil LTTE fighters in the secession battle challenged Sri Lanka's patriarchal social structure. The LTTE fighters changed the conservative appearance of Sri Lankan women to reflect gender equality within society. A Sri Lankan Tamil woman is generally expected to be indoors, quiet, conservative and should admit her entire life to the family. Above all being conservative means wearing her traditional dress (Saree), having Bindi, a decoration worn by women and jewelery to reflect her cultural identity. On the contrary, the L... in the center of the newspaper... about the war in Iraq and women. Mostly this source refers to international information and not to the topic of my included essay. I mentioned this to compare LTTE fighters with international fighters and women. So I quoted online. For comparison obviously this source provides me with evidence. Overall this source is not very necessary for this essay. Wang, Peng. “Women in the LTTE: Birds of Freedom or Cogs in the Wheel?” Journal ofPolitics and law, March 2011. Web. 05 February 2014. This is also an academic journal on the LTTE and women fighters that describes the secession battle well. This article clearly describes the topic of the battle and its consequences. But this newspaper failed to differentiate women's equality in struggle and emancipation. So this article is not much used for my argument, but it helps to know the background of the battle.
