In formulating her response, Klein places great importance on what she calls "Blockadia": local action by local activists to prevent destructive development for the environment and to get compensation for costs when such development goes wrong (e.g. BP's Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico). He applauds the success of activists – particularly “first nations” in his native Canada – in thwarting some fracking and pipeline projects. Klein is not alone in this; many would applaud him, me among them. But such initiatives do not constitute a coherent political program, let alone an environmental one. And the more he tries to extrapolate a potential program from individual initiatives, the more the clear contours of his thinking become blurred and the more he relies on rhetoric and
