Topic > How sympathy is provoked in “Piano” and “Crabbit Old…

In the two poems Crabbit Old Woman and Piano, both writers use language to provoke sympathy towards a person and their situation by using the present tense and the past to create emotions. In the poem Piano, Lawrence introduces us to his childhood using a piano describes what his childhood memories were with his mother and what comfort he felt in her presence they are all in the present tense and the rhyme scheme is rhyming cups. The musical sounds of the piano take him back to his childhood years. As a child he sat under the piano right under the vibrating strings, while his mother sang and smiled because of the way he pressed his “little balancing feet”. Also, his mother looks much more elegant and sophisticated due to his “balancing feet”. Also, the fact that he feels like he is crying for his mother, and know the truth that he will never see her again, which is probably the main reason why he cries. His childhood memories arrive unexpectedly in his new amazing life. The memorable melody made him have no choice but to remember the past, "Despite myself, the insidious mastery of singing" and "betrays me". These quotes are the best examples, as they give the impression that he does not want to enter the memory and offers a slight feeling of self-loathing. In my opinion, the poem evokes sympathy because it was written autobiographically. This creates a more delineated image in our heads, as the poet writes from his point of view, his childhood, and his encounter with this problem. Also the fact that the strong and emotional words that were used to describe... in the center of the paper... she is just like an animal left with her bones. The word "carcass" is also often used to describe the corpse of an animal. The phrase "And I love reliving life" implies that when he remembers his good old days and pleasant memories he feels as if he is re-living them. Furthermore, the fact that “now there is a stone where I once had my heart” brings us great sympathy towards the old woman because it seems that she no longer has emotions and that her heart has become hard and she feels no empathy within herself . Overall, both poems are very strong and emotional. The fact that both of these poems are autobiographical gives us the opportunity to see what life is like in other people's situations and how they seem to be without passion for anything. The types of situations they go through are very different from each other but at the same time very similar.
