Topic > Intelligent Design: A Bona Fide Theory - 1281

Sir Isaac Newton once said, "Gravity explains the movements of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion." As a major contributor to modern physics with his discovery of gravity, Isaac Newton convincingly believed in an intelligent designer who created the universe and humanity. According to the Discovery Institute (n.d.), “The theory of intelligent design holds that some features of the universe and living things are best explained by intelligent cause, not by an undirected process such as natural selection” (par.1). Although intelligent design is rapidly becoming a scientific theory with more than 50 peer-reviewed journals published, there is currently no tolerance for its teaching in the American public school education system (Discovery Institute, 2012, para. 2). Those opposed to the idea of intelligent design (ID) being taught in schools argue that it would be unconstitutional, contrary to the separation of church and state, and ID should not be taught due to the significant amount of evidence supporting the theory of evolution. Those for ID taught in public schools argue that intelligent design is a scientific theory that employs the methods commonly used by other historical sciences to conclude that some features of the universe and living things are better explained by an intelligent cause than the evolution cannot explain. Intelligent design does not specifically discuss who or what designed the universe, but simply that something out there must be responsible for playing a role in creating intelligent beings. The American public education system must recognize that there is another substantive theory that explains the origin of life other than evolution.
