Summary The article I chose to summarize discusses many different ways to control antibiotic resistance. I thought this was a good article to read so I can adapt some of these strategies into my practice as a nurse practitioner. Healthcare changed forever with the discovery of antibiotics. Although it is considered one of the greatest discoveries of the last century, less work has been done to create new antibiotics in recent years. Once the use of antibiotics became widespread, resistance to these drugs slowly developed. This antibiotic resistance has put a strain on healthcare and something needs to be done to combat this problem. Encouraging the discovery of new antibiotics, preventing the overprescription of antibiotics currently on the market, and reducing the time it takes to obtain laboratory results are just some of the ways to combat antibiotic resistance. Healthcare professionals have an important role to play in solving this problem. This article explains how antibiotics work. It is important to understand how antibiotics work so that we can better understand how to control antibiotic resistance. Each antibiotic works differently, but ultimately they all do the same thing, which is to stop bacteria from living and growing. This can be done by preventing the bacteria's cell wall from forming properly, which will lead to the cell filling with water and dying due to membrane rupture. Another way antibiotics work is by preventing protein synthesis. Proteins are necessary for chemical reactions and cell division, so inhibiting protein production will stop cell division so that no new bacteria grow, but it will also allow existing bacteria to die. Antibiotics can also disrupt DNA synthesis. This with… half the paper… helps prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance. I know I need to limit my antibiotic prescriptions. I know that teaching my patients about common diseases and infections and antibiotics will help me in my practice. Teaching infection prevention will also become an important part of my practice. I understand the importance of prescribing the appropriate antibiotic and will strive to prescribe narrow-spectrum medications if possible. I will rely on diagnostics and sensitivity testing to improve my antibiotic prescribing skills. I will make sure to keep up to date on all the latest information on antibiotics and antibiotic resistance so that I can prescribe the best possible medication for my patients.
