Topic > Pros and Cons of Orcas - 687

Should captive orcas be banned nationwide? Some states across the country are trying to ban orca captivity. Recently California has made a great effort to try to stop this horrible tragedy. SeaWorld itself has hidden and lied about the lives of killer whales and the mistakes they have made. Many people do not realize the true tragedy that is caused every day by the capture of the orcas that live at SeaWorld. The orca is the largest member of the dolphin (Gammon) family. Orcas are known to be very social animals that travel in groups called pods. Each pod has a unique form of communication with different dialects from one group to another (Basics). Orcas are very emotionally attached to their families. They all work together to hunt for food and protect each other. When orcas become separated, they send out long calls trying to find each other again. In the 1970s and 1980s, when people began catching orcas, they herded the whales into bays. They then had fishing boats with large nets that will catch the whales, where they can spot the younger ones (Hoyt). If any whales are killed at the hunting scene, the fishermen cut them open, fill them with rocks and tie anchors to them, so that they sink to the ocean floor. People don't realize how serious the crime is being committed. Once the whales reach SeaWorld, they begin their training. They are released into small pools of water, where they interact with the other whales at the facility. If the orcas perform the stunt correctly, they are recast with the fish. If the new whale does this incorrectly, neither the trained nor the beginner whale will be reformulated. Immediately after failing, the... center of the paper... could have collected the food. After being hand-fed for all these years, would orcas remember how to hunt on their own? After thinking deeply about this process, they came to the conclusion to release them into a marine enclosure. This would keep the whales in waters open to the public, but not used for entertainment or performance purposes (David). Orca captivity is a major problem occurring in today's society. Many people have different opinions on whether or not orcas should be banned from captivity. SeaWorld is harming the lives of orcas, rather than improving their health. All captive orcas should be released back into the wild. These large and incredible creatures should enjoy life outdoors, instead of living in small aquariums. By releasing these large animals into their habitat, it will create a more beneficial life for the whales.
