The ability to communicate has always had its advantages, with its rich history and traditions, modern business communication is considered a modern concept. Business leaders rate business communication skills as one of the personal factors needed to get a job. As stated by Hynes (2005) “effective corporate communication is the key to planning, leading, organizing and controlling organizations resources to achieve objectives” (Conrad & Newberry, 2011, p112). This essay will examine what business communication skills are needed for the Westminster Business School degree process, whilst providing recommendations on studying different modules of your choice in order to increase and develop career opportunities. What is communication? Communication is the act of transferring information from one place to another (Means, 2009). There are various categories of communication and more than one can occur at any time. Communication is sent from a sender through a communication channel to a recipient. The sender interprets the message into a form appropriate to the communication channel, and the recipient then decodes the message to understand its meaning and importance. Misunderstandings can occur at any stage of the communication process. To make communication effective it is essential to minimize potential barriers to communication at every stage of the communication process. This can be seen in “Effective Corporate Communication” (Murphy et al, figure 1.3, p14).
