I firmly believe that people of my generation are smarter and more intelligent than our ancestors, while my grandparents do not agree with this idea. I see that the current discovery of scientific facts and modern technology help shape our idea of the world and lead us to a better understanding of the world, giving us speed skills, convenient access to information and facts of nature, and correcting false myths. Furthermore, the brand new teaching style allows today's children to be more creative and confident than those of the old days, as students can ask their teacher when in doubt and participate in an open discussion in class. While our grandparents spent their free time reading books, playing with wooden toys and feeling the fresh air outside the house, kids of my generation are surrounded by televisions, video games, tablets, smartphones and computers in a closed room. These gadgets, unlike books which require a lot of imagination to build a world from text, give a vivid image of the imagination on the screen. My grandparents say that reading a printed book makes the reader think, collect vocabulary, and analyze the story as they browse through it. However, research conducted by Joy Hirsch, director of fMRI research at Columbia University Medical Center, in 2013 shows that “following the plot of an edited film [on television] that depicts a visual action requires a complex and coordinated effort across multiple brain areas". This media activates and stimulates the brain. Our senses work to get our attention and help our brains become more attentive to our surroundings. In this respect we are smarter than our grandparents when it comes to activities. With these gadgets we develop skiing... middle of paper... our own eyes. We may not memorize things better than our grandparents, but we are smarter than them when it comes to creativity and confidence. It is now clear that in many ways people of this generation are smarter than past generations. We have modern technology that provides us with a convenient way to live and access information. With this technology we are given the correct understanding of nature. We also become much more reasonable and creative. Therefore, I still firmly believe that we are indeed smarter than our parents and grandparents. Works Cited “Flappy Birds Dominates App Lists.” UPI.com. Network.
